Desalination and Hydrogen Production Course
This course prepares you to solve the water supply for green hydrogen projects in coastal areas. You will learn desalination processes, water quality requirements for electrolysis and the energy demand of these plants, with practical examples of typical plant configurations.

You are starting from scratch in this subject. The programme is designed precisely for that.
What is the Desalination and Hydrogen Production Course?
This short course prepares you to solve the water supply for green hydrogen projects in coastal areas. It covers the water quality requirements of electrolysers, desalination and purification up to ultrapure water, the integration of water and hydrogen plants, and brine management.
It also introduces lines of research still under development, such as direct seawater electrolysis and offshore hydrogen production.
What makes it different: an emerging subject, an integrated view of desalination, purification and electrolysis, a clear distinction between mature technologies and research, an agile five-module format and a practical case on designing the water supply for a coastal plant.
Programme highlights
- Understand the water quality requirements of each type of electrolyser.
- Design the water treatment by combining desalination and purification.
- Integrate systems by exploiting the energy and heat synergies between plants.
- Assess direct seawater electrolysis and offshore hydrogen.
- Strengthen your professional profile in hydrogen, water and energy projects.
- Train at the meeting point between water and green hydrogen.

Questions about the Desalination and Hydrogen Production Course
It is an active line of research, but today the usual practice is to desalinate and purify the water before electrolysis.
Electrolysis consumes water stoichiometrically and treatment adds losses; the course teaches you to calculate the complete balance.
Only at an introductory level; the course focuses on water and its integration with production.
It is not essential; the necessary basic concepts are explained.
You design the water supply and treatment system for a hydrogen plant on the coast.
100% online, with a virtual campus available 24/7, live sessions that are recorded and tutorials with the teaching staff.
The programme has a workload of 300 hours. You can progress at your own pace within the schedule we give you when you enrol.
Each programme has its own start date, which is shown on this page and confirmed by the admissions team when you request information.
