Frequently Asked Questions
Sixteen sections covering what people actually ask before enrolling: admission, financial aid, how the application works, how long a programme takes, what the platform does, how you are assessed, and what our programmes are and are not. Where an answer depends on a figure we have not published, it says so instead of guessing — and you can always ask us directly.
Q: What do I need to be admitted to a Navalis programme?
A: Short courses have no prerequisites. Diplomas and master’s degrees look at previous study and documented professional experience together. There is no entrance examination.
Q: Is there a deadline to apply?
A: No. Enrolment is open all year and there is no intake date to wait for.
Q: Will qualifications from another country be accepted?
A: They are assessed case by case, from the scans you upload. We do not require sworn translations, legalisation or a formal equivalence procedure.
Q: I am coming ashore after years at sea. Does my sea time count?
A: Yes, as professional experience for the shore-based areas: ports and terminals, logistics, shipping business and law.

A: Yes, as professional experience for the shore-based areas: ports and terminals, logistics, shipping business and law.
Q: What financial aid exists?
A: Three routes: a Navalis scholarship, payment of the fee in instalments, or your employer invoiced directly. A large share of our students are funded by the company they work for.
Q: How do I ask for it?
A: Before you pay. Tell us the programme and your role, and we answer with what you would actually pay, in your own currency. Aid is not normally applied to an enrolment already settled in full.
Q: Can I use a public grant?
A: Navalis is private online training. We do not administer public grant schemes and are not part of any public programme. If a scheme in your country covers private online training, you apply to that body directly and the decision is theirs.

Q: How does the online application work?
A: You send the enquiry form with your role and your certificates, an advisor confirms the programme, and you enrol and pay. Documents are uploaded as scans; nothing has to be posted.
Q: How do I pay?
A: In your own currency, by card or bank transfer. Instalments are available — ask before you pay.
Q: When does the campus open?
A: Access is granted once payment clears, and you start on whatever day you decide to.

Q: How long do the programmes take?
A: Short courses are 60 to 150 hours of study, diplomas 300 to 600, and master’s degrees 600 to 1,500. How long that takes in weeks depends entirely on you, because there is no fixed timetable.
Q: What areas can I study?
A: Seven: navigation and deck, marine engineering, ports and terminals, maritime logistics, offshore and energy, shipping business and law, and safety and environment.
Q: Can I study more than one programme at a time?
A: Yes, though we usually advise finishing one before starting the next, especially if you are sailing.

Q: What support do I get while I study?
A: An academic tutor for questions on the content, an advisor for planning the programme around your rotation, and technical support for the platform.
Q: What happens if I join a ship in the middle of a programme?
A: Tell your advisor. Modules can be reordered so the heavy ones fall on leave, and pauses or extensions are handled case by case — ask before you need one, not after.
Q: Is there student life?
A: Not in the campus sense. There is no cohort to keep up with and nothing live to attend: the platform is open 24 hours and you study when you can.

Q: Can I obtain a navigation licence through Navalis?
A: No. Certificates of competency, STCW endorsements, GMDSS and ECDIS certificates are issued by a national maritime authority, or by a centre it approves, and normally require in-person assessment, simulator hours or documented sea service. We do not issue them.
Q: Then what is a Navalis programme for?
A: It teaches the subject the certificate is about — the regulation, the systems, the cargo, the operations — and it complements the certificates you already hold.
Q: Will it help me pass the examination?
A: It can cover the theory and prepare you for it. The examination and the certificate remain the authority’s.

Q: Does Navalis have agreements with other institutions or companies?
A: We have none to announce, and we would rather say so than publish a partnership we cannot evidence. What is true is more useful: we teach students in more than 30 countries, in their own language, at their own country’s prices.
Q: Does that limit what I can study?
A: No. The catalogue is the same wherever you are. If a programme is not published in your language yet, ask — it may already exist in another.

Q: Where do I get a specific question about a programme answered?
A: From an advisor, before you enrol. You describe your rank or role, your certificates and your sea or shore time, and you get a programme, a level and a realistic number of study hours a week.
Q: Will I be sold a programme I do not need?
A: If the right answer is a shorter course, a different area or a national training centre, that is the answer you get.
Q: In what language?
A: In the language of the site you are reading.

Q: How are the courses delivered?
A: Entirely through the virtual campus. Each programme is divided into modules you complete in order, and each module closes with an assessment. There are no live sessions and no fixed timetable: the platform is open 24 hours.
Q: Will it work from a ship?
A: That is what the format is for. Because there is nothing live to attend, a low-bandwidth connection is enough to work through the material.
Q: What do I need?
A: A computer, tablet or phone with a browser, and a connection. Nothing to install.
Q: Who do I ask when something breaks?
A: Technical support, through the campus. Academic questions go to your tutor — they are different people.

Q: How are the programmes assessed?
A: Module by module. Each module closes with an assessment you take on the platform, and you move on once it is passed. You are assessed on what you can do with the content, not on attendance — there is nothing to attend.
Q: What do I receive at the end?
A: A certificate of completion issued by Navalis Institute, stating the programme, its hours and the modules covered, signed by the academic management. Its recognition for professional or academic purposes depends on the regulations of each country.
Q: Is it an official qualification?
A: No. Navalis is a private training provider, not a public education body and not a maritime administration. Statutory certificates come from national authorities.

Q: Can I connect with students from other countries?
A: Our students are in more than 30 countries, but study is individual and self-paced: there is no cohort and no group timetable. What you get instead is a programme that fits a rotation.
Q: Is the content the same everywhere?
A: The subject is international — the conventions, codes and contracts are the same ones everywhere. Where a requirement depends on your country, we say so rather than give a general answer that is wrong locally.

Q: Does Navalis find me work placements?
A: No. We are not a recruitment or placement service: we do not place students in jobs and we do not promise employment outcomes. Anyone who tells you an online course gets you a berth is selling you something.
Q: So what guidance is there?
A: Mentoring with people working in the part of the industry you are aiming at — most often officers and engineers moving ashore into operations, surveying, chartering or terminal management. A mentor can tell you how the role is actually filled and which of your experience counts there.

Q: What kinds of licence can I obtain?
A: None through us. Sea service, statutory certificates, endorsements and medical fitness are the business of your flag state and your national maritime authority. We can tell you what they will ask for; we cannot shorten it.
Q: Then where does the training fit?
A: Alongside it. Our programmes build the knowledge the job runs on — regulation, cargo, systems, contracts, operations — and they complement the certificates you already hold. Progression runs on certificates and documented sea time, issued by an administration, never by a school.

Q: What advantages do international partnerships give me?
A: We have none to claim, and we would rather say so than name an entity we have no agreement with. The advantage we can evidence is a different one: the content is international by nature, and the price is set for the country you live in rather than converted at checkout.
Q: Is my qualification recognised abroad?
A: Recognition is decided by the body doing the recognising — an employer, an administration, an institution — not by us. Ask them what they accept before you pay anyone.

Q: How do I get in touch?
A: Through the form on the contact page. Tell us your role, your certificates and what you want to study, and the reply comes from someone who can answer it, in the language of this site.
Q: And once I am enrolled?
A: Academic questions go to your tutor, platform problems to technical support, and anything about the programme itself — order of modules, extensions, documents — to your advisor.

Q: Can I combine online study with something in person?
A: Our side is entirely online. Where a statutory certificate needs in-person assessment or simulator hours, that part is done at a centre approved by a maritime authority, not with us — our programme sits alongside it.
Q: Can my employer pay?
A: Yes. We invoice companies directly and handle group enrolments for crews, terminal shifts and office teams.
Q: What if I enrol and change my mind?
A: Cancellation and refunds follow the conditions on the legal page of this site. Read them before you pay.
Q: Can I study from any country?
