The concept of boat carpentry and how it differs from shipwright work, general carpentry and marine cabinetmaking; types of wooden boats and the structural and non-structural components where basic carpentry is involved; physical and mechanical properties of wood in marine environments and its behaviour under humidity, salinity and temperature changes; solid timber, marine boards, plywood, laminates and complementary materials; criteria for choosing materials according to strength, workability, durability, weight and exposure to the sea.
02Tools, equipment and safety in basic boat carpentry work60 h
Hand tools for measuring, marking, cutting, rebating, assembling and fitting parts; portable power tools and basic workshop equipment for small-scale boat carpentry; measuring, marking out and squaring on curved surfaces, angles and boat-specific parts; maintenance, adjustment and correct use of tools for precision, safety and quality; occupational risks in cutting, sanding, drilling, gluing and assembly.
03Cutting, shaping, joining and assembling wooden parts on boats60 h
Rip, cross, curved and fitting cuts for structural and finishing parts; planing, rebating, sanding and shaping to adapt wood to hull geometry and irregularities; basic mechanical joints with screws, bolts, dowels and sea-resistant fasteners; gluing, marine adhesives and surface preparation for durable joints; basic assemblies for benches, bulkheads, hatches, access panels, frames and interior furniture.
04Basic construction and repair of interior and exterior wooden elements on boats60 h
Basic fabrication of seats, lockers, engine beds, hatches, access panels and supports for small boats; fitting and adjusting light bulkheads, panels, linings and compartments in confined spaces; repair of parts damaged by moisture, impact, rot, wear or faulty fastenings; replacement of boards, reinforcements, battens and basic components while preserving shape and function; integration of fittings, hinges, catches, brackets and nautical accessories.
